The information about the 16 billion stolen records that were leaked on the internet is becoming clearer a couple of days after news of the exposed data was first released by Cybernews security researchers. The initial report by the researchers sparked news accounts of a new data breach. However, the login credentials were not part of a massive, single breach. As the researchers noted, they were found in a collection of 30 exposed datasets they’ve discovered since the beginning of the year, with the datasets containing anywhere from tens of millions of records to more than 3.5 billion. As argued in such…

Canada faces a growing radicalization and extremism crisis, yet the public remains broadly uninformed, or worse, misinformed. Despite tens of millions invested in counter-radicalization over the past decade, threats like those associated to the Pro-Palestinian movement, the imminent “Hands Off Iran” marches, and left-wing extremism are largely ignored. Where are the detailed reports dissecting these movements? Where are the network maps or guides to their flags, symbols, and rhetoric, as seen for far-right groups? Incidents like the Edmonton City Hall attack and the thwarted Ottawa plot demand scrutiny, yet they fade from view. This isn’t an oversight—it’s a systemic failure…

Computer vision (CV) models are only as good as their labels, and those labels are traditionally expensive to produce. Industry research indicates that data annotation can consume 50-80% of a vision project’s budget and extend timelines beyond the original schedule. As companies in manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics race to modernize their stacks, the data annotation time and cost implications are becoming a big burden. Thus far, labeling has relied on manual, human effort. Auto-labeling techniques now entering the market are promising and can offer orders-of-magnitude savings, thanks to significant progress in foundation models and vision-language models (VLMs) that excel at…

Microsoft has announced plans to periodically remove legacy drivers from the Windows Update catalog to mitigate security and compatibility risks. “The rationale behind this initiative is to ensure that we have the optimal set of drivers on Windows Update that cater to a variety of hardware devices across the windows ecosystem, while making sure that Microsoft Windows security posture is not compromised,” Microsoft said. “This initiative involves periodic cleanup of drivers from Windows Update, thereby resulting in some drivers not being offered to any systems in the ecosystem.” As the company explained on Thursday, the first phase of this “cleaning…

Remote access across operational technology (OT) is under more strain than ever before. Vulnerabilities in legacy systems that cyber adversaries are increasingly exploiting with alarming precision are growing alongside industrial networks. Convenience-driven traditional OT remote access security solutions frequently fall victim to complex attacks, exposing vital infrastructure. It’s just as hard not to let operational defenses get in the way of organizational agility. Balancing usability with security is walking a tightrope. Lax rules breed violations, but overly strict rules can hinder productivity. Granular access restrictions, adaptive authentication, and session monitoring that adapts to risk, without getting in the way of workflows,…

Ethan Robish // Ads serve an important function on the internet.  For many websites, ads are the main form of revenue that funds the site’s content or service.  This, however, doesn’t prevent them from annoying users, taking up bandwidth, or even being malicious.  They can completely hijack the page you are viewing with popups and scare tactics.  You, as a savvy security blog reader, know better than to “click to remove virus” or believe that your phone is out of memory and needs fixing.  But can you say the same for your spouse, your children, or your parents? Nightmare Material…

A new and concerning cyber threat, dubbed Mocha Manakin, has been identified by cybersecurity research firm Red Canary. First tracked in January 2025, this threat uniquely combines social engineering tricking people with specially built malicious software. Mocha Manakin uses a deceptive tactic called paste and run (also known as Clickfix or fakeCAPTCHA). This method fools computer users into unknowingly copying and running harmful commands, often disguised as steps to fix access to a document or prove they are human. These fake instructions bypass regular security checks, making it easy for the malicious script to download further harmful programs onto the…
