publishing my previous post on benchmarking tabular reinforcement learning (RL) methods, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t quite right. The results looked off, and I wasn’t fully satisfied with how they turned out. Still, I continued with the post series, shifting focus to multi-player games and approximate solution methods. To support this, I’ve been steadily refactoring the original framework we built. The new version is cleaner, more general, and easier to use. In the process, it also helped uncover a few bugs and edge-case issues in some of the earlier algorithms (more on that later). In this post,…
Breaking a single patent into tradable NFT “shares” turns a complex intellectual property right into a liquid asset that can be bought, sold, and managed by its stakeholders. By creating unique tokens that each represent a small share of an invention, inventors can get immediate funding without giving control to one backer. These tokens include metadata like claim hashes, inventor decentralized identifiers, and expiry blocks, which clearly show the origin and details of the patent. This way, inventors can reach a global group of small investors who are motivated to evaluate, enhance, and support innovation from the start. Crowd-review using…

John Strand // AV is Dead Long Live Whitelisting. We have been discovering more and more of our tests bypass AV controls with ease. We have yet to see any iteration or vendor in the blacklist space who is adequately preventing attacks using simple blacklist solutions. What needs to be done in this industry is a move towards a whitelisting approach. This can either be in the form of a product like Bit9, Lumension or Bromium. Or, it can be in the form of using existing controls such as Applocker and/or Software Restriction Policies (SRP). We recommend organizations start with Applocker then work their way up to full Application Whitelisting. …
Mature OT cybersecurity programs span beyond perimeter defenses, with an emphasis on deep visibility, continuous risk assessment, and strong governance reflecting the unique conditions and needs of OT (operational technology) environments. The roadmap accounts for legacy systems, scattered industrial installations, multilayer network segmentation, secure remote access to the plant, and asset inventories that are up to date, even as critical equipment ages. But most industrial companies are still stuck using legacy risk models designed for the way our systems used to be, rather than the way they are today. The question remains, however, is most, if not all, of the…

In recent years, North Korea has deployed thousands of so-called IT workers to infiltrate Western businesses, get paid salaries, and send money back to support the regime. As the schemes have become more successful, they have grown increasingly elaborate and employed new tactics to evade detection. But this week, the United States Justice Department revealed one of its biggest operations to tackle IT workers to date. The DOJ says it has identified six Americans who allegedly helped enable the schemes and has arrested one of them. Law enforcement officials searched 29 “laptop farms” in 16 states and seized more than 200…
