Trellix Advanced Research Center has exposed a new wave of highly sophisticated SquidLoader malware actively targeting financial services institutions in Hong Kong. This discovery, detailed in Trellix’s technical analysis, shared with Hackread.com, highlights a significant threat due to the malware’s near-zero detection rates on VirusTotal at the time of analysis. Evidence also points to a broader campaign, with similar samples observed targeting entities in Singapore and Australia. A Covert Attack The attack begins with spear-phishing emails written in Mandarin, accurately crafted to impersonate financial institutions. These emails deliver a password-protected RAR archive containing a malicious executable. The email body itself…

The ongoing momentum towards becoming and staying compliant would transform industrial cybersecurity, moving operators out of reactive checklists and into continual, systematic change. Formerly something that was addressed periodically, cyber compliance is now an integral part of the daily process of doing business as regulations tighten across the globe and the specter of cross-border audits looms. Industrial tends to be pretty far from anything where it’s a modern OT (operational technology) system, and logging and access control, and real-time visibility were considered as design parameters. But now these abilities are how audit readiness is demonstrated. Making it audit-ready is more…

When, one year ago today, a buggy update to software sold by the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike took down millions of computers around the world and sent them into a death spiral of repeated reboots, the global cost of all those crashed machines was equivalent to one of the worst cyberattacks in history. Some of the various estimates of the total damage worldwide have stretched well into the billions of dollars. Now a new study by a team of medical cybersecurity researchers has taken the first steps toward quantifying the cost of CrowdStrike’s disaster not in dollars, but in potential harm to…

need a simple, engaging, and scalable method for presenting geospatial data, they often turn to a heatmap. This 2D visualization divides a map into equal-sized grid cells and uses color to represent the magnitude of aggregated data values within the cells. Overlaying heatmaps on geographical maps permits quick visualization of spatial phenomena. Patterns such as clusters, hotspots, outliers, or gradients become immediately obvious. This format can be useful to decision-makers and the public, who might not be well-versed in raw statistical outputs. Heatmaps may be composed of square cells (called grid-based or matrix heatmaps) or smoothly contoured “continuous” values (called…

Will the future of decentralized finance, or DeFi, be built on foundations of verifiable accuracy and performance? This question underpins a recent collaboration in the blockchain sector. Apex Fusion, a protocol built on Cardano’s open-source framework, has partnered with Well-Typed, an engineering firm known for its involvement in Cardano’s core development. This partnership centres on VECTOR, Apex Fusion’s institutional-grade implementation of the Cardano codebase, aiming to integrate expertise in formal verification and architectural insight. Formal verification is a method used in computer science and engineering to prove the correctness of a system with respect to a specific formal specification or…
